A group of Democratic legislators in the United States has penned a message to President Joe Biden expressing concerns over ongoing Israeli limitations on humanitarian assistance entering Gaza, questioning their adherence to US legislation.
Among the 86 House of Representatives members, there is a shared belief that there is substantial proof indicating Israel’s non-compliance with a provision of the US Foreign Assistance Act. This provision mandates that recipients of US-funded weaponry uphold international humanitarian principles and allow unhindered distribution of US aid.
The letter stated, “We anticipate the government to guarantee [Israel’s] observance of existing laws and to take all possible measures to prevent further humanitarian crises in Gaza.”
In February, Biden issued a national security memorandum requiring assurances from beneficiaries of US military support that they are following guidelines on humanitarian law and aid delivery.
Last month, at least four State Department divisions advised US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Israel’s claims of abiding by international humanitarian regulations in Gaza are deemed as “not trustworthy nor dependable”.
