A person has passed away after plunging from Ohio Stadium during Ohio State University’s graduation event on Sunday.
Around 12:30 p.m., an officer radioed for assistance on the OSU police channel, requesting, “I require medics and officers at gate 30 (of Ohio Stadium)… had one plummet off the stadium.”
“An individual dropped from the stands. They have perished,” declared OSU representative Ben Johnson. “We currently have no further information to provide. Police and emergency responders are present. Counseling and additional support resources will be made available for those impacted by today’s incident.”
The area where the fall occurred was cordoned off with significant yellow tape and officials on alert, as detailed by Dispatch photographer Doral Chenoweth, present at the scene.
“Inconceivable — I can’t believe it,” stated an eyewitness. The observer reported witnessing a solitary individual fall, coinciding with the last graduates passing through that section as they made their way into the stadium through the tunnel typically used by football players during OSU home matches.
Witneses in the stands and some participants at the ceremony displayed visible distress, as observed by Dispatch reporter Jordan Laird, inside.
The incident was not addressed by speakers at the event, including Chris Pan, a social entrepreneur and OSU graduate. Pan touched on world harmony and Bitcoin, alongside other topics, and also sung ‘This Little Light of Mine.’
This is a developing story. Keep an eye out for updates.
