A member of the Minnesota state legislature was detained under suspicion of committing a first-degree burglary, as reported by law enforcement officials on Monday.
Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell was apprehended after she was discovered inside a residence located in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, which is nearly a four-hour drive northwest of Woodbury – the area she serves – according to statements provided to various media including CBS News and KMSP-TV by Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd.
At the age of 49, Mitchell was taken into custody at the Becker County Jail on Monday and is currently being held on account of the burglary accusation. As of yet, she has not been formally indicted by the authorities.
USA TODAY has made attempts to contact representatives on behalf of Mitchell for any statements.
Records demonstrate that Mitchell’s recently deceased father resided on the same street.
Police were called to the site at approximately 4:45 a.m. when a homeowner reported a burglary in progress at that time on Monday morning, Chief Todd relayed to the press. Officers arriving at the location encountered a female figure inside the property, who was later confirmed to be Mitchell by the authorities.
The decision to proceed with the allegations will be at the discretion of the Becker County Attorney’s Office.
According to what the Star Tribune reported, county property tax archives reveal that in 2022, the block where the purported burglary took place was where Mitchell’s stepmother and deceased father had their residence.
The Caucus of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, while refraining from providing a detailed commentary, acknowledged their awareness of the ongoing issue as CBS News conveyed.
Legislators are held to a significantly high standard of behavior by the public, expressed Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson in a comment to CBS News. “As further details emerge, we are anticipating that the repercussions will correspond to the severity of her actions, both legally and in her legislative duties,” he stated.
